Air Niugini has announced that they will progressively replace their aging Fokker, Boeing 737-800 and 767-300 fleets with Airbus A220-300s, A220-100s, and Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, beginning in September 2025.

On Friday (January 31, 2025), Air Niugini, the national flag carrier of Papua, New Guinea, announced the launch of their fleet renewal program.  The carrier will gradually replace their Fokker fleet, as well as their leased Boeing 737-800s and 767-300s with Airbus A220s and Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.  Air Niugini expects to take delivery of their first Airbus A220-300 in September 2025, coinciding with Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary.  Two additional A020-300s will join the airline’s fleet in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026.  The new A220-300s will serve domestic routes during the day and international routes at night.

Additionally, eight A220-100s are scheduled to enter service between 2026 and 2028, gradually phasing out the Fokker fleet and replacing the airline’s leased 737-800s. For their widebody fleet, Air Niugini’s leased Boeing 767-300s will exit the carrier’s fleet in 2026, coinciding with the lease expiration date.  Air Niugini and Boeing are also currently exploring aircraft bridging options, while a permanent widebody decision has been made.  The carrier has received approval to purchase two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, but due to the current production issues at Boeing, the airline will review the purchase decision.

Air Niugini is also investing in crucial infrastructure and comprehensive training programs.  This includes extensive training for pilots, engineers, technical crew, cabin crew and ground staff, as well an upgrade to key infrastructure to support the renewed fleet.  The upgraded fleet will offer spacious cabins and modern amenities, substantially enhancing the guest experience.  The A220s, with a capacity between 113 and 138 passengers, will enable Air Niugini to connect Port Moresby wit new destinations across the Asia-Pacific region, while reducing fuel use and emissions.
