American Airlines has today announced the launch of automated tags for mobility devices, becoming the first U.S. airline to roll out the innovation. The tags are expected to improve wheelchair and mobility handling across the carrier’s network.
On Tuesday (July 23, 2024), American airlines announced the launch of new automated tags for wheelchairs and mobility devices, which have been designed to improve handling across their network. Developed in-house by the carrier’s Technology team, the tags are currently used in airports served by American and their regional partners. The new automated tags replace the previous manual tags, and feature customer and device-specific data such as itineraries, delivery points, device weight, battery type and the number of items removed and taken onboard.
In today’s announcement, American Airlines’ SVP – Airports, Reservations and Service recovery, Julie Rath, said,
“American is committed to improving the travel experience for our customers who use wheelchairs and mobility devices. Streamlining the check-in and tagging process is an industry-leading effort that will help us further improve how we handle wheelchairs for our customers who entrust us to transport their devices on their journey.”
The more detailed automated tags will ensure team members handling the devices have more accurate and consistent information, providing enhanced visibility across the customers’ journeys. The automation also enables the device’s information to be more easily shared with frontline team members’ applications, ensuring they have the right information at the right time.
American Airlines’ purpose is ‘To Care for People on Life’s Journey®’. Shares in the American Airlines Group, Inc., trade on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol AAL and the company’s stock is included in the S&P 500.
