On Monday (February 28, 2022), American Airlines announced the official launch of their reimagined AAdvantage® loyalty program. From March 1st, the program will introduce ‘Loyalty Points’, the only metric needed to track and earn status, where one qualifying mile earned equals one Loyalty Point. With the new metrics, members will no longer need to track miles, dollars and/or flight segments to earn status. Members have been accruing Loyalty points since January 1st, 2022, and in March will be able to see their progress toward status with the Loyalty Points in their AAdvantage account on aa.com. Once a status level is achieved, the enhanced status will be valid through March 31st of the following year.

In today’s announcement, American Airlines’ Chief Customer Officer, Alison Taylor, said,

“The past few years have taught us that loyalty is not one-size-fits all — it comes in different forms. We recognize the path to earning status is different for each individual, which is why we’re giving members more ways to earn Loyalty Points — whether by flying, shopping or using an AAdvantage credit card. We want to make it easier for our customers to achieve status wherever they may be in their travel journey.”

As part of an enhanced travel experience for all status members, American is expanding complimentary upgrade access for AAdvantage Gold AAdvantage Platinum members, to include all flights within North America, regardless of distance. For travel from March 2, 2022, an upgrade will automatically be requested if everyone in the reservation is eligible. Additionally, members will only need to use 500-mile upgrades if they want to upgrade travel companions who don’t hold AAdvantage status. Later this year, American will also extend complimentary upgrades to one companion traveling on the same flight as a status member, while at the same time, all existing 500-mile upgrades in the members’ accounts will convert toward 250 Loyalty Points toward the 2022 status qualification period.

Earning miles is now easier than ever, as AAdvantage members earn miles when flying on American, oneworld Alliance airlines, and other eligible carriers like JetBlue and GOL. Members can also earn miles from everyday spending with the AAdvantage eShopping™, SimplyMiles™, and AAdvantage Dining™ programs, when booking hotels and car rentals with AAdvantage partners, or when making purchases with an AAdvantage credit card.

American Airlines’ purpose is to “care for people on life’s journey.” Shares in the American Airlines Group, Inc., trade on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol AAL and the company’s stock is included in the S&P 500.
