On Tuesday (January 14, 2025), American Airlines announced the launch of a new partnership with the George T. Baker Aviation Technical College in Miami, supporting students seeking aviation maintenance careers.  With this professional collaboration, students will enjoy ongoing opportunities to engage with American’s Technical Operations team members at the carrier’s Miami (MIA) hub and on campus.  As an added benefit, top students will be guaranteed interviews for open positions upon graduation and receipt of their FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate.

This announcement formalizes a long-standing relationship between American and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which has been developing the next generation of Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) for years.  In 2010, American donated a McDonnell Douglas MD-80 to Baker Aviation, with the legacy aircraft still being used for training.  Additionally, the airline’s MIA-based Tech Ops team mentored the school’s student team for the 2024 Aerospace Maintenance Council Competition, where they placed first in two events and finished second in the School category.

In Tuesday’s announcement, American Airlines’ Vice President of Line Maintenance, Evie Garces, said,

“George T. Baker Aviation Technical College is widely known as a leader in aviation education, and we’ve hired many of their graduates.  This partnership ensures American will continue hiring the best-trained AMTs who will keep our fleet flying safely for years to come.  We’re looking forward to working closely with Baker students to ensure a successful transition from classroom to hangar.”

American Airlines employs over 14,600 team members at their MIA hub, including over 1,200 Technical Operations team members, many of whom are Baker graduates.  In addition to the partnership with the George T. Baker Technical College, American’s Tech Ops team has also partnered with the Aviation Institute of Maintenance in Chicago, Tulsa Tech in Oklahoma, and West Los Angeles College in California.  These partnerships ensure future AMTs receive real-world training today, as they prepare for success in aviation maintenance careers.

American Airlines’ purpose is To Care for People on Life’s Journey®.  The carrier offers thousands of daily flights to over 350 destinations in more than 60 countries. American is also a founding member of the oneworld global alliance whose member airlines serve over 900 destinations worldwide.  Shares in the American Airlines Group, Inc., trade on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol AAL and the company’s stock is included in the S&P 500.
