ANA has announced that starting November 1st, 2024, guests will be able to purchase original Wajima lacquered chopsticks through their international inflight duty-free service. The initiative showcases Japanese craftmanship, while supporting Wajima artisans.
On Thursday (October 17, 2024), All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced that from November 1st, they will offer original Wajima Lacquered chopsticks for sale through their international inflight duty-free service. While supporting Wajima lacquerware artisans, this initiative promotes the beauty and craftmanship of this traditional Japanese art form to a global audience. The crafting of Wajima lacquerware has been passed down over hundreds of years in the Wajima region of Ishikawa Prefecture, and is celebrated domestically and internationally for its exquisite design and superior quality.
In Thursday’s announcement, ANA’s EVP – Customer Experience Management and Planning, Tomoji Ishii, said,
“Introducing the artistry of Wajima lacquerware to our in-flight experience through original chopsticks underscores ANA's deep commitment to cultural preservation and artisan support. This initiative is rooted in Japan's rich heritage and allows passengers to connect with traditional craftsmanship while contributing to its sustainability.”
Wajima lacquerware artisans were severely impacted by the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, leading to the loss of workshops and creative opportunities. ANA initiated the planning and development of ANA original Wajima lacquered chopsticks last February, in support of the artisans, the revival of their businesses, and to showcase the charm of Japan’s traditional Wajima lacquerware. The chopsticks feature designs inspired by Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms and airplanes. Each pair has been meticulously hand-painted with lacquer by skilled craftsmen.
Starting November 1st, 2024, the ANA Original lacquered chopsticks will be available for purchase on international flights departing Japan for the duty-free price of 9,500 yen (US $64.00). Five percent of sales will be donated to the Wajima City Office in Ishikawa Prefecture, in support of the continued craftmanship of traditional Wajima lacquerware.
