On Thursday (December 26, 2024), Avianca announced an expansion of connectivity between Florida and Latin America, with new routes from Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa.  The carrier will launch new service from Fort Lauderdale to Medellin and Managua, from Miami to San José and Guatemala City, as well as first-ever direct service between Tampa and Bogotá.  The new routes are expected to commence in 2025, expanding the carrier’s network between Florida and Latin America to 16 direct routes.

In Thursday’s announcement, Avianca’s CEO, Frederico Pedreira, said,

“Florida has historically been a key gateway for connections to Latin America, which is why it is essential for us to contribute to reuniting families, boosting tourism, and promoting business.  So far in 2024, we have transported over four million passengers on more than 27,000 flights to and from the United States.  These new routes address the needs of our customers and provide an opportunity to offer more direct flights to key destinations in both regions where we already have a strong presence.”

Also commenting on Avianca’s new Tampa service, Tampa International Airport’s CEO, Joe Lopano, said,

“The significance of a new Avianca route between Tampa and Bogota is enormous, being TPA’s first to South America in nearly 50 years and a long-awaited nonstop connection.  We expect this flight to be popular with both business travelers and those connecting with loved ones, as well as adding an exciting and vibrant new travel destination to our route map.  We look forward to celebrating the launch of this service with Avianca at a future date.”

Inbound customers to Bogotá from Tampa will also enjoy seamless one-stop connectivity to over 75 destinations across 25+ countries in the Americas and Europe via Avianca’s extensive network.  Customers will also have access to 25 destinations in Colombia, including vibrant cities such as Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, Quibdó, San Andrés, Leticia, and more.  By year-end 2024, Avianca will operate a network of 165 routes across more than 25 countries, including eight new destinations.
