On Monday (February 20, 2023), Bonza, Australia’s newest airline, announced their first commercial flight to a Victorian destination with new direct service between Sunshine Coast and Melbourne Avalon Airport. The historic inaugural flight touched down at Melbourne Avalon Airport at approximately 13:00 AEDT. The route will operate three times weekly, with tickets now available for booking through late October 2023. Flights between Sunshine Coast and Avalon went on sale last month with one-way fares from $79 per person. Later this week, Bonza will launch ticket sales from their Melbourne base with an additional 12 routes, joining 15 routes already on sale via the Fly Bonza app.

In Monday’s announcement, Bonza’s CEO, Tim Jordan, said,

“Today is a significant milestone as we get wheels up into Victoria for the first time. South East Queenslanders can now fly direct to Avalon for a wide range of holiday experiences in Melbourne, Geelong, the Surf Coast and the Great Ocean Road. Likewise, Victorians can now fly direct from Avalon to the Sunshine Coast to visit loved ones and take a well-earned break.”

Also commenting on the new service, Avolon Airport’s CEO, Tiny Brun, said,

“We are thrilled to partner with Bonza and host the very first flights into Victoria. The route between Sunshine Coast and Melbourne (Avalon) is very popular and is fantastic for Victoria. This launch today provides more choice, competition and opportunities for travellers to enjoy more of this great country. We are proud to make flying easier and accessible for keen travellers!”

Sunshine Coast Airport’s CEO, Andrew Brodie, added,

“The Sunshine Coast is a highly sought after holiday destination for Victorians, and being able to fly directly out of Avalon will make travel so much easier for people who live in Greater Melbourne. Similarly, people who have friends or family in Victoria, now have greater options for travel as Bonza will be operating three flights to Avalon a week. This new route is also great news for Sunshine Coast locals who love their sport events or who want to spend time enjoying the incredible foodie culture that Melbourne is known for.”

Bonza is Australia’s new, and only independent low-cost carrier (LCC), enabling Australians to explore more of their own backyard at low prices. The airline currently operates a fleet of five brand new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, which will grow to eight by the end of the first year of operations. Bonza’s initial route map includes 27 routes to 17 destinations. Over 90 percent of Bonza routes are not served by any airline, and 96 percent are not served by a low-cost carrier. The lowest fares are now available for booking on the FlyBonza App.
