Bonza has today launched new direct service between Sunshine Coast and Cairns. The carrier has also marked a milestone, reaching 100,000 seats sold on the FlyBonza app since sales opened in January. This week, Bonza will also launch their Melbourne base.
On Monday (March 27, 2023), Bonza announced the launch of new service between Sunshine Coast and Cairns. The carrier will also launch their Melbourne base and five additional routes later this week. Additionally, Bonza is celebrating a major milestone, having sold 100,000 seats on the FlyBonza app since sales opened in January 2023. Bonza’s route between Sunshine Coast and Cairns five times weekly, including a Friday to Monday option for SE Queenslanders seeking a weekend away. On Wednesday, the airline will introduce two weekly flights between Cairns and Mackay, and on Friday, a twice weekly service between Cairns and Rockhampton.
Traveling on today’s inaugural Sunshine Coast-Cairns flight, Bonza’s CEO, Tim Jordan, said,
“Last week, we sold our 100,000th seat on the Fly Bonza app. This week, we begin taking customers to Cairns, Newcastle and Melbourne as well as launch new routes into Whitsunday Coast, Mackay and Rockhampton. People of the Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Moreton Bay and Brisbane are booking direct flights to Cairns for as low as $79 per person one way. Why wouldn’t you, when for less than a tank of fuel you can be transported to the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef? In return, locals from Cairns and surrounds are taking advantage of low cost fares to the Sunshine Coast to take in the plethora of surf beaches, craft breweries or to see friends and family more often.”
Also onboard today's flight, Sunshine Coast Airport’s CEO, Andrew Brodie, said,
“Cairns and Tropical North Queensland is a travel destination for not only Sunshine Coast locals but for people from all over the world, and getting there from the beautiful Sunshine Coast just got easier. For locals, it means they don’t have to go south to fly north and for visitors to the region, who want to explore further north, they can now do so easily and affordably. This new route is a game changer, in terms of the ease in which travel can be facilitated through the Sunshine Coast Airport, and it will have a positive impact on the economy of both regions which are highly sought after destinations.”
Guests traveling onboard today’s inaugural flight between Sunshine Coast and Cairns were welcomed with a reef and rainforest-inspired celebration on arrival, which featured delicious food and drinks showcasing local producers and fun pops of Bonza’s signature purple.
Further commenting on the route launch, Tourism Tropical North Queensland’s Chief Executive, Mark Olsen, said,
“We look forward to welcoming new and repeat visitors from the fast-growing communities within easy reach of the Sunshine Coast airport when Bonza touches down in Cairns for the first time.”
Bonza is Australia’s new, and only independent low-cost carrier (LCC), enabling Australians to explore more of their own backyard at low prices. The airline currently operates a fleet of five brand new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, which will grow to eight by the end of the first year of operations. Bonza’s initial route map includes 27 routes to 17 destinations. Over 90 percent of Bonza routes are not served by any airline, and 96 percent are not served by a low-cost carrier. The lowest fares are now available for booking on the FlyBonza App.
