British Airways has today announced that they will acquire Boeing’s MRO hangar facility and operation at London Gatwick, securing jobs, while expanding their presence at the airport.

On Monday (February 17, 2025), British Airways announced that they will acquire the Boeing hangar facility and MRO facility at London Gatwick in a move that will preserve jobs and expand BA’s presence at the airport. Ultimately, British Airways’ customers will benefit from the addition of skills, expertise and facilities in support of the carrier’s operations. With this transaction, the company will establish a new wholly-owned subsidiary called ‘British Airways Engineering Gatwick’ (BAEG), which will join existing MRO operations in South Wales (BAEW) and Glasgow (BAMG). Current team members employed by Boeing at the Gatwick facility will, subject to review and consultation, be transferred to the new subsidiary during Q2 2025.
In Monday’s announcement, British Airways’ Chief Technical Officer, Andy Best, said,
“Today’s announcement will help us to be the very best in the business by bringing in the skills and expertise of former Boeing colleagues and adding a large, modern hangar to our portfolio of Engineering facilities. It will support the reliability of our entire fleet, which is good news for our customers and colleagues.
“We’re proud of our Gatwick operation and this will give us a stronger presence which underlines our commitment to the airport.”
“I’d like to welcome our new colleagues to British Airways, including highly-skilled and experienced Licensed Aircraft Engineers. I’m delighted that, subject to consultation, they will be joining the BA family and I hope to be recruiting more people in the future.”
The acquisition of the Boeing’s Gatwick hangar and MRO business will significantly bolster BA’s engineering operation at the airport, enabling the carrier to continue carrying out minor 777 maintenance on-site. The increased capacity will also allow British Airways to in-source some scheduled heavy maintenance work on their Airbus A320 and A321 fleets. Additionally, it will enhance capacity for unscheduled work, while providing more maintenance resilience and relieving capacity challenges at other locations.
