Croatia Airlines today celebrated their 35th anniversary, which was marked by their first international flight operated with the carrier's New Airbus A220-300, with service between Zagreb and Frankfurt.
On Wednesday (August 7, 2024), Croatia Airlines celebrated their 35th anniversary, marking the occasion with the first international flight operated with their new Airbus A220-300, which flew between Zagreb and Frankfurt. Founded on August 7, 1989, as Zagreb Airlines (Zagal), the carrier began passenger revenue service in December of the same year. On July 23, 1990, Zagal changed its name to Croatia Airlines, with the new carrier operating their first commercial flight from Zagreb to Split on May 5, 1991. On April 5, 1992, Croatia Airlines operated their first international flight, also with service between Zagreb and Frankfurt.
In a ceremony at Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday, Croatia Airlines’ Commercial Division Director, Slaven Žabo, said,
“We are proud and happy that today, as we celebrate Croatia Airlines’ 35th anniversary, we have provided our international passengers with a first-class flying experience in our new aircraft. We are particularly pleased that the first international flight that our new Airbus A220 operated was on the Zagreb – Frankfurt route, which is very symbolic considering that this route saw the first international flight in our company’s history in 1992. I sincerely thank our partners at Frankfurt Airport for 32 years of successful business cooperation, and we hope that many passengers will continue to depart from and arrive in Frankfurt aboard our new and redesigned fleet.
Also commenting on Croatia Airlines’ first international A220-300 flight, Fraport’s Head of Traffic Development, Alexandra Ulm, said,
“We are very proud that Croatia Airlines has chosen Frankfurt as it’s first international destination for their very new aircraft. We wish Croatia Airlines and its new A200-300 many happy landings at FRA in the future!
Since first taking flight 35 years ago, Croatia Airlines has operated nearly 709,000 flights, carrying over 45.8 million passengers. The carrier is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), as well as Star Alliance. The delivery of Croatia Airlines’ first Airbus A220-300 in July 2024 marked the start of the airlines largest-ever fleet renewal program, with the entire fleet to be renewed by 2027. The second A220-300 is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2024, with the next six to be delivered in 2025, four in 2026, and three in 2027. In total, Croatia Airlines’ renewed fleet will include 15 new A220-300s by 2027.
