On Wednesday (July 12, 2023), Delta Air Lines marked 70 years of service to Puerto Rico. In 1953, Chicago and Southern Airlines (C&S) started service to San Juan with one weekly flight on a Lockheed Constellation carrying 57 passengers. Several months later, C&S merged with Delta, which is now the longest-serving tenant at Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU), the largest and busiest airport in the Caribbean. Delta currently offers service to Puerto Rico from five U.S. hubs, including Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), Detroit (DTW), New York (JFK), and Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP). Between 1990 and 2022 alone, Delta carried more than 24 million customers to and from the ‘island of enchantment.’

In Wednesday’s announcement, Delta Air Line’s Director of International Specialty Sales, Athar Khan, said,

“As we celebrate 70 years of service to Puerto Rico, we reflect on the role Delta’s people and our partners have played in making our service to the island a success. We’re also grateful to the local community. We remain committed to being the airline that provides them with outstanding and reliable service to points throughout the globe and the airline that continues to bring new visitors to discover this beautiful island.”
