On Saturday (October 31, 2020), easyJet celebrated the arrival of their inaugural flight at the German capital’s new Willy Brandt Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). easyJet special flight EJU 3110 arrived at BER on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at 14:00 local time and was greeted by a traditional water cannon salute by the BER Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) team. EasyJet will operate out of BER’s Terminal 1 and will offer guests improved connectivity throughout Europe. Additionally, in cooperation between ‘Worldwide by easyJet’ and Deutsche Bahn, the carrier will offer seamless intermodal transfers in the future. easyJet has also opened their first engineering station outside of the UK at Berlin’s new airport which is located on the south pier of BER, further demonstrating their long-term commitment to the region. In Saturday’s announcement, easyJet’s CEO, Johan Lundgren, said,
“After months of preparations, we are ready and proud to be the first airline to start commercial operations at ‘Willy Brandt’ airport tomorrow [November 1st]. Our customers will benefit from an improved experience in Terminal 1 with easy connections between flights and rail including our new Worldwide by easyJet partner Deutsche Bahn. Despite the pandemic, we remain committed to sustainable flying now and in the future through our partnerships with Airbus and Wright Electric where we are focusing on the development of hybrid, all-electric and hydrogen technologies. In the interim, we continue to offset the CO2 emissions from fuel we use. So, we look forward to make an important contribution to the region – connecting the vibrant city of Berlin and wider region with the major cities and holiday destinations in Europe for many years to come.”
easyJet’s first commercial flight from BER departed for London-Gatwick on Sunday, November 1, 2020. With the consolidation of operations from Berlin-Tegel and Berlin-Schönefeld to BER, easyJet simplifies their processes, as now their Airbus fleet and crew will be housed under the same roof. Berlin’s new airport offers travelers an enhanced experience with shops, spacious architecture and seamless public transportation connections as well as a fast-track security checkpoint. easyJet employs over 1,000 people at their BER base, which opened in June 2020, and plans to offer service on over 70 routes to/from the airport in 2021.
