Ethiopian Airlines Chooses Safran’s Z400 Economy Class Seats for Eight Boeing 777-9s

From the Aircraft International Exhibition in Hamburg, Ethiopian Airlines has announced the selection of Safran’s Z400 Economy Class seats for eight new Boeing 777-9s. Each aircraft will be equipped with 383 Economy seats and are scheduled for delivery from 2027.

On Thursday (April 10, 2025), Ethiopian Airlines announced the selection of Safran’s Z400 Economy Class seats for eight new Boeing 777-9s, scheduled for delivery from mid-2027. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed at the Aircraft International Exhibition in Hamburg. Ethiopian Airlines’ New 777-9s will be equipped with 383 Economy Class seats. The Z400 seats will offer an improved inflight entertainment (IFE) experience with the latest-generation 13-inch screens compared to the previous 11.6-inch displays. Additionally, the seats are 12.5 percent lighter than previous generation seats, ensuring more cost efficient operations.
In Thursday’s announcement, Ethiopian Airlines Group’s CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, said,
“We are pleased to have signed this MoU with Safran for the provision of the Z400 seats for our 777-9 aircraft. As a technology driven airline, we are committed to enhancing our passengers’ onboard experience through state-of-the-art technology that offer passenger comfort while also ensuring operational efficiency and sustainability.”
Also commenting on Ethiopian’s Z400 seat selection, Safran Seats’ CEO, Victoria Foy, added,
“We are delighted to deepen our partnership with Ethiopian Airlines by providing our advanced seats for their B7779 fleet. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to innovation and excellence in passenger comfort, supporting Ethiopian Airlines as it expands its horizons and enhances its inflight services.”
Ethiopian Airlines and Safran have enjoyed a longstanding partnership, highlighted most recently by the ongoing collaboration to equip their A350s with Business and Economy Class seats.
