On Wednesday (March 15, 2023), Aer Lingus announced that Georgia Teck and Florida State University will compete in the 2024 edition of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. This will be the Florida State Seminoles’ first-ever overseas football game, while Georgia Tech will make a welcome return to Dublin. The game will take place at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday, August 24, 2024. With over 20,000 fans expected to travel from the U.S. to Dublin for the highly-anticipated clash, research from Fáilte Ireland and Grant Thornton estimates the event will be worth €69 million to the Irish economy. Like the Notre Dame and Navy match this August, the 2024 game will be the opening event for the College Football season, and is an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) game. The game will be played on ‘Week Zero’ and will be televised live on ESPN to an estimated audience of over four million U.S. viewers.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD said,

“The Aer Lingus College Football Classic is fast becoming a popular fixture in the Irish sporting calendar, with supporters from America, Ireland and beyond gathering in Dublin to enjoy the atmosphere and high-quality college football. The game will provide a huge boost to tourism and hospitality in Ireland and we look forward to welcoming the teams and supporters of Georgia Tech and Florida State University to the Aviva Stadium in August 2024.”

Commenting on the airline’s sponsorship of the game, Aer Lingus’ CEO, Lynne Embleton, said,

“Our sponsorship of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic provides us with a unique opportunity to drive awareness of the Aer Lingus brand in our key North American market as well as in our home market. Aer Lingus has a proud history of connecting Ireland to the US for almost 65 years and we are committed to continuing to grow our long-haul network connecting Ireland and Europe to North America through our Dublin Hub. We look forward welcoming both Georgia Tech and Florida State University to Ireland for the 2024 game. Aer Lingus is proud to continue its association with college football through the Aer Lingus College Football Classic series.”

In 2024, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will hope to call on Ireland’s own David Shanahan, a member of the 2017 Kerry Panel that won the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship. Mr. Shanahan is studying at Georgia Tech and is a punter, a special teams ‘kicking team’ player. During his first season at Georgia Tech, Shanahan appeared in all 12 games and handled 61 of Georgia Tech’s punts, despite having never played an American Football game previously.
