On Monday (July 22, 2024), from the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow (FIA), Boeing announced that Japan Airlines has signed an agreement to purchase 10 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for 10 more.  The carrier will deploy the new widebody aircraft on long-haul routes to meet growing international travel demand to North America, Asia and India.  Japan Airlines currently operates a fleet of more than 50 Boeing 787 Dreamliners.  Once finalized, the order will be listed on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.  JAL’s current orderbook with Boeing now includes 10 Boeing 787s and 21 737 MAX family jets on order.

In Monday’s announcement, Japan Airlines’ Executive Officer of Procurement, Yukio Nakagawa, said,

“We are delighted to announce the addition of 787 Dreamliners to our fleet.  This order underscores our commitment to accelerating the introduction of the modern and more fuel-efficient aircraft to deliver unparalleled service to our customers and further reduce CO₂ emissions.  We greatly appreciate the strong relationship and support from Boeing, which has been instrumental in our efforts to modernize our fleet and expand our international routes.”

Also commenting on JAL’s incremental 787 Dreamliner order, Boeing’s SVP – Commercial Sales and Marketing, Brad McMullen, said,

“Japan Airlines continues to be a global ambassador for the 787 Dreamliner and this latest agreement is a testament to the versatility and efficiency of the 787-9 for the airline’s key long-haul routes.  We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are pleased that they have re-selected the 787 Dreamliner as they continue to modernize their world-class fleet.”

Over the last few years, Japan Airlines has leveraged the versatility of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to open new direct point-to-point routes from Tokyo to San Diego, Boston and Bangalore.  Offering a range of up to 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 km), the Boeing 787-9 has the longest-range capability within the Dreamliner Family.

Since entering passenger revenue service in 2011, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner Family has opened over 400 new direct routes worldwide, and has received more than 1,900 orders from 87 customers, more than half from repeat customers such as JAL, which operates both the 787-8 and 787-9 models.
