Today, Lufthansa’s Airbus A350-900, registration D-AIVC, was Christened ‘Munich’ by Bavarian Minister President Dr. Markus Söder. The aircraft is the first in the fleet to feature upgraded Business Class and will be deployed immediately between Munich and Canada.
On Friday (April 29, 2022), Lufthansa celebrated the christening of their newest Airbus A350-900, ‘Munich’, with the honors carried out by Bavarian Minister President Dr. Markus Söder. The aircraft, registration D-AIVC, is the first in the airline’s fleet to feature a new upgraded Business Class cabin, offering direct aisle access for all guests, more shoulder space, and a seat that quickly converts into a two-meter-long bed. The new Business Class marks the start of an extensive renewal of Lufthansa’s cabins, and next year the carrier will introduce a new best-in-class product in all cabins, including Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First Class. The A350-900 ‘Munich’ will be deployed immediately on routes from Munich to Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, serving as a global ambassador for the Bavarian capital.
At today’s ceremony, Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO, Carsten Spohr, said,
“The A350 is the quietest and most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft in our fleet. With a significantly improved Business Class on board, this aircraft also represents the beginning of one of the largest product modernizations in Lufthansa's history. This aircraft is sustainable and offers customers a premium flight experience. The "Munich" is a worthy ambassador of the Bavarian capital to the world.”
The A350 christened today is the sixth Lufthansa aircraft named Munich. At Munich-Riem Airport on October 11, 1960 Lufthansa’s first ‘Munich’ a Boeing 707, registration D-ABOF, was christened by Ilse Vogel, wife of the then Lord Mayor, Dr. Hans-Jochen Vogel. The previous or fifth ‘Munich’ was an Airbus A380, registration D-AIMB, which was christened on July 28, 2010 by Edith von Welser-Ude, and has since been retired from the Lufthansa fleet.
Lufthansa is expanding their A350 fleet in Munich from 17 to 21 aircraft. Currently, the A350 is the Group’s most modern and fuel-efficient long haul aircraft. To accelerate their fleet modernization program, Lufthansa signed leases for four additional A350-900s in the fall of 2021, which will also be deployed from Munich. The quiet and efficient Airbus A350-900 only consumes around 2.5 liters of fuel per passenger for each 100 kilometers flown, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 30 percent compared to the aircraft models it replaces.
