On Monday (December 2, 2024), Lufthansa Group announced that in partnership with Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), they have launched new Upstream Check-In (UCI) service across eight ports of the Greater Bay Area.  The Group has offered this innovative service since September 30, 2025.  The service allows passengers flying with Lufthansa German Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines to complete immigration, check-in and baggage tagging in eight ports, including six ferry ports and  two land ports, prior to heading to the SkyPier, located in the restricted area of HKG.  Passengers can then proceed directly to the boarding gates without having to clear immigration and customs procedures in Hong Kong.

Speaking at Today’s launch ceremony at Shenzhen Shekou Port today, Lufthansa Group’s SVP – Sales & Distribution, Mr. Frank Naeve, said,

“Our group is heavily investing in modernizing our fleet with the acquisition of state-of-the-art long-haul aircrafts.  But that’s not all, we are working continuously to improve our customer experience including the opening of new lounge facilities, offering new catering concepts as well as enhancing the digital experience for our customers.  Overall, we are investing more than € 2.5bn in Product & Services by 2025.”

Passengers using UCI can collect the baggage at their final destination, without further required baggage claim, or airline check-in. With UCI, the minimum connection time at the HKIA SkyPier Terminal is reduced from 110 minutes to around 80 minutes.  Currently, Lufthansa Group offers daily service from Honk Hong to both Frankfurt and Zurich.  To enjoy the convenient UCI service and purchase a ferry ticket, customers are required to present valid Lufthansa Group air tickets with confirmed seats departing Hong Kong.  The eight Greater Bay Ports offering the service include Zhongshan, Shenzhen Shekou, Guangzhou Nansha, Dongguan Humen, Guangzhou Pazhou, Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal and Hong Kong–Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Zhuhai Port, Hong Kong–Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Macau Port.
