The airline will participate in the opening of the new Berlin Capital Airport (BER) on October 31, 2020 with a special flight of Lufthansa’s Airbus A320neo ‘Neubrandenburg’ which will depart Munich (MUC) at 12:50 p.m. and land at BER on schedule at 2:00 p.m.
On Thursday (October 29, 2020), Lufthansa announced that they will celebrate the grand opening of the New Berlin Capital Airport (BER) on October 31, 2020 with a special flight. The carrier’s A320neo named ‘Neubrandenburg’ will depart Munich (MUC) at 12:50 p.m. and arrive at BER on schedule at 2:00 p.m. The airline will carry Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Chairman of the Board, Carsten Spohr, along with 40 VIP invited guests. The special Lufthansa flight will be 100 percent carbon-neutral via the company’s platform Compensaid and will utilize sustainable fuel.
The Lufthansa Group will commence operations as the market leader at BER with regular flight operations starting on November 8, 2020. The inaugural flight to BER highlights Lufthansa’s longstanding relationship with the German capital, with 30 years of service to and from Berlin. The Lufthansa Group has been Berlin’s market leader since September, offering service with six of the Group’s airlines and holding a 30 percent market share. Lufthansa Group’s airlines will offer guests an extensive range of services at the new Berlin Capital Airport including a 650 square meter Lufthansa lounge which will seat 150 when opened. Naturally, the lounge has been designed with the highest standards of hygiene and social distancing protocols. Lounge guests will enjoy a phenomenal panoramic view of the apron and even enjoy a view of the world famous Berlin TV Tower (weather permitting).
Berlin-Tegel will officially cease flight operations on November 8, 2020, at which time Lufthansa will relocate to BER at 6:45 a.m., when Lufthansa's flight LH173 to Frankfurt is scheduled to depart the new airport for the first time. Lufthansa’s first arrivals at BER are planned for November 7, 2020, and Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and SWISS are scheduled to start BER operations on November 8th, followed by Brussels Airlines on November 9, 2020. The Group’s Eurowings subsidiary will be moving to the new capital airport a few days earlier, with a regular EW flight taking off from BER on November 4, 2020. Eurowings will initially operate out of BER Terminal 1 but will be based in Terminal 2 for the long term. The Group’s Italian airline, Air Dolomiti will begin flying to the new Berlin airport in summer 2021.
