On Friday (September 20, 2024), Lufthansa announced that their Oktoberfest 2024 Trachtencrew has taken flight from Munich.  Both crewmembers and airport team members are now wearing traditional Bavarian dress, while travelers can also look forward to Bavarian delicacies both in the carrier’s lounges and onboard select flights.  On the day before the start of this year’s Oktoberfest in Munich, Lufthansa’s Trachtencrew debuted on a flight from Munich to Osaka, with a traditional costumed flight to Johannesburg to follow on September 30th.

Lufthansa has practiced this tradition for many years during the Oktoberfest season, where crewmembers trade their classic uniform for traditional Bavarian garments on numerous German and European routes.  The ladies wear ‘dirndls’ and the men where traditional suits, often including lederhosen.  This year, the traditional clothing for long-haul cabin crew has again been designed and tailored by the Munich-based traditional garment firm Angermaier.  Like last year, the collection is certified according to ‘STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX.’, which means that all components and materials have been sustainability produced and processed.

The official start of Oktoberfest, also known as ‘Wiesn’, will also be celebrated in Lufthansa’s festively decorated lounges in Munich Airport’s Terminal 2, where visitors can enjoy typical Bavarian beers and traditional dishes.  In the Business Class and Senator Lounges, the menu selection ranges from Munich potato soup to roast pork and steamed dumplings with vanilla sauce.  Fine Bavarian dishes will also be served in the Two First Class lounges, with selections including Bavarian duck breast and sweet Oktoberfest delicacies, as well as ‘After Wiesn’ drinks, such as the fresh ‘Ingwer Shot’, helping guests recover from long day as they prepare for departure.

Onboard select long-haul flights from Frankfurt and Munich, travelers in all classes can enjoy Bavarian delicacies through the end of September.  Selections range from roast chicken to mushroom ragout with pretzel dumplings and roasted almonds, along with Oktoberfest chocolates.  Premium Economy and Economy Class guests will enjoy Nuremburg bratwurst with Bavarian cabbage and mashed potatoes.  For dessert, travelers in all cabins will enjoy Bavarian cream with raspberries.

Naturally, no Oktoberfest celebration would be complete without the right drinks.  Onboard, passengers can choose from a popular selection of Bavarian beers, as well as a special Lufthansa cocktail, the ‘Avionic Wiesn Edition’, which is an apéritif  with notes of juicy peach and citrus, as well as a subtle hint of wild meadow herbs and harmonious marigold.

Additionally, customers will receive a small souvenir of Lufthansa’s ‘Oktoberfest in the Clouds’, with toothbrushes and other items needed during the flight to be handed out in Premium Economy, while First and Business Class guests on long-haul flights will receive small heart-shaped Oktoberfest bags, perfect for a visit to Oktoberfest.
