On Thursday (March 31, 2022), Luxair, the national carrier of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, celebrated the 60th anniversary of their inaugural flight which took place on March 31, 1962. The airline was initially founded in 1961, following the reorganization of its predecessor, Luxembourg Airlines Company, which had been incorporated in 1948. The carrier’s first flight was from Luxembourg to Paris Le Bourget Airport and was operated with a Fokker F27. That same year, the airline also launched two more routes with service to Amsterdam and Frankfurt, ultimately carrying 9,000 passengers during their inaugural year of operation.
For 2022, Luxair will increase the number of destinations on offer to 88, three more than in 2021 and 21 more than in 2019. The airline currently operates a fleet of four Boeing 737-800s, four Boeing 737-700s, and eleven De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s (formerly Bombardier Q400s). One Embraer E190 will join the airline's fleet from mid-May under a wet lease agreement with German Airways. To celebrate their 60th anniversary, Luxair will introduce a number of special activities throughout the year. The first promotion was launched a little over a month ago, when the airline invited artists from Luxembourg and the region to sketch their vision of Luxair’s future through their next special livery design. The contest ended on March 28th, and the winner will be announced shortly.
