On Thursday (September 28, 2023), Allegiant Travel Company announced the resignation of the company’s Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board of Directors, John Redmond. Allegiant’s Founder and current Executive Chairman, Maurice J. Gallagher, will resume the CEO role, while remaining Chairman of the Board. Mr. Gallagher has spent over four decades developing and building successful airline business models, including WestAir, ValuJet, AirTran Airways and Allegiant.

Since taking control of Allegiant in 2001, Gallagher has grown the company into one of the most profitable airlines in the world, with over 120 aircraft operating more than 550 routes with service to 120 cities. In addition to the airline, Allegiant has expanded into other leisure and hospitality businesses, including the Sunseeker Resort at Charlotte Harbor, Florida, which is scheduled to open in Q4 2023.

In Thursday’s announcement, Allegiant Travel Company’s outgoing CEO, John Redmond, said,

“I am grateful to the board for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this incredible organization. I’m particularly proud of the Sunseeker team we've put in place, and I know they will carry the project over the finish line and establish the hotel as a premier destination in Southwest Florida.”

Also commenting on the leadership transition, Allegiant’s Chairman and CEO, Maurice J. Gallagher, said,

“We have built a management team headed by Greg Anderson, President, and many other talented and dedicated executives that is among the best in the industry. This team is well-positioned to lead the Company as we continue to set the standard for the U.S. leisure travel sector. We’re excited about completing construction and opening Sunseeker Resort. Industry veteran Micah Richins and his experienced team will continue to lead Sunseeker and we look forward to a successful opening and operation.”

Founded in 1999, Las Vegas-based Allegiant is an integrated travel company with an airline at its heart, and a focus on linking passengers from small to medium cities to world-class leisure destinations with all non-stop flights and industry-low average fares. The company offers base airfares that are often half the price of a typical roundtrip ticket and currently operates an all-Airbus A320 Family fleet. Allegiant has also placed an order for up to 100 Boeing 737-7 and 737-8-200 MAX jets.
