Miami International Airport celebrated the inaugural ITA Airways flight from Rome on Tuesday. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held by Miami-Dade County and ITA Airways officials, and the aircraft was welcomed with a traditional water cannon salute.
On Wednesday (March 2, 2022), Miami International Airport (MIA) announced the arrival of ITA Airways’ inaugural flight (AZ0630) from Rome, which landed on Tuesday, March 1st at 16:40. The occasion was marked by a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by Miami-Dade and ITA Airways officials, and the aircraft was greeted by a traditional water cannon salute from Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue’s ARFF team. The airline is offering three weekly return services on the route, which will be expanded by to five weekly flights in April, and daily service from June 2022. Prior to the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Italy was one of MIA’s top 20 destinations, generating nearly 400,000 passengers in 2019. Currently, ITA Airways is the only airline offering direct service between Miami and Italy.
In Wednesday’s announcement, Miami International Airport’s Director and CEO, Ralph Cutié, said,
“We look forward to once again providing our passengers direct flights to Italy because of ITA Airways’ new Miami service. MIA continues to lead the way for international travel to Florida, and the addition of ITA Airways now brings back nonstop service from one of our most popular international markets.”
For summer 2020, ITA Airways will offer service to 23 domestic, 34 international and seven intercontinental destinations. International long-haul flights will be operated with Airbus A330s and A350s.
Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA Airways) was founded in November 2020 and is the new Italian national carrier wholly-owned by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. Commencing operations in October 2021, the carrier currently has a fleet of 45 narrowbody and seven widebody aircraft, including 18 Airbus A319s, 27 A320s and seven A330s. During 2022, ITA Airways’ fleet will grow to 78 aircraft, increasing to 105 aircraft by the end of 2025 (82 narrowbody aircraft and 23 widebodies).
