PLAY Airlines has announced the appointment of Sigurður Örn as the carrier’s new Chief of Business Development. In his new role, Mr. Örn will oversee the expansion of PLAY’s business ventures across all departments.
On Saturday (April 13, 2024), PLAY Airlines announced the appointment of Sigurður Örn as the company’s new Chief of Business Development, where he will oversee the airline’s ventures across all departments. Mr. Örn holds an MBA from the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh, and has extensive experience in the aviation industry. Previously, he served as Chairman and CEO of Bluebird Nordic and was also a Board Member of Avion Express. Additionally, Sigurður Örn played a key role in negotiating acquisitions for Avia Solutions Group (AGS), including Avion Express, SmartLynx and Bluebird Nordic.
In Saturday’s announcement, Sigurður Örn, said,
“It is very exciting to be joining PLAY at this pivotal moment. The company’s remarkable growth, evidenced by its doubling of revenue last year while maintaining a competitive cost structure, positions PLAY for even greater success in the future. I am eager to contribute to this journey.”
Also commenting on Mr. Örn’s appointment, PLAY’s CEO, Einar Örn Ólafsson, added,
“We are excited to have Sigurður Örn joining our team. He brings valuable experience and knowledge of the aviation industry, which will be useful to the company. We have ambitious plans, and Sigurður Örn's expertise will undoubtedly bolster our efforts.”
Founded in 2019 by Arnar Magnússon and launched in June 2021, PLAY is a new Iceland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) which operates flights to nearly 40 destinations between Iceland and Europe, as well as to North America. Currently, PLAY operates flights from Baltimore, Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. in the U.S., as well as from Toronto, Canada. The carrier’s core motto is ‘Pay Less PLAY More’, meaning that the airline’s customers spend less on airfare and more while enjoying their holiday destination. PLAY’s fleet of 10 Airbus A320/A321neos is the youngest fleet in Europe.
