PLAY will launch new transatlantic service from Baltimore/Washington International Airport from April 20, 2022, and from Boston Logan International Airport starting May 11, 2022. The new service will expand the carrier’s network to 24 destinations.
On Thursday (December 16, 2021), PLAY Airlines announced the launch of their first transatlantic routes with service to/from Boston and Washington D.C. (US). From April 20, 2022, PLAY will offer service from Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI), with flights from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) starting on May 11, 2022. The carrier has received all required permits to operate U.S. flights from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Tickets are now available for booking on both routes, as well as to PLAY’s European destinations including Iceland, London, Paris, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, Brussels, Stavanger, Trondheim, Gothenburg and more. With the new intercontinental routes, PLAY will offer service to 24 European and U.S. destinations for 2022.
In Thursday’s announcement, PLAY’s CEO, Birgir Jónsson, said,
“Travelers around the world are hungry to venture to new destinations and recent data shows that nearly two thirds of Americans are planning their next vacations, with international destinations top of mind. We’re proud to expand PLAY´s service to the United States with services to and from Boston and Baltimore/Washington, D.C. offering both American and European travelers a new way to reach iconic destinations. With our reliable and affordable flights, travelers can better enjoy their destination rather than overspending on the flight to get there.”
Play will service both U.S. routes with new Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft, which offer a 10-15 percent reduction in fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions compared to current single-aisle aircraft.
Founded in 2019 by Arnar Magnússon, PLAY is a new Iceland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) which operates flights between Iceland and Europe, and will launch transatlantic long-haul service between Europe and North America in spring 2022. The airline launched their inaugural passenger revenue flight on Thursday, June 24, 2021, with service between Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and London Stansted (STN). PLAY’s fleet of Airbus A320neo and A321neos currently connect customers to 16 European destinations, growing to 24 in 2022. Next spring, the carrier will have added new aircraft to their fleet, prior to the launch of low-cost transatlantic flights to North America.
