On Wednesday (November 10, 2021), PLAY Airlines announced the launch of four new routes for summer 2022, including flights to Lisbon and Prague from May and service to Bologna and Stuttgart starting in June 2022. Customers traveling from these cities will also have the opportunity to visit Iceland and enjoy the country’s stunning natural landscapes, diverse attractions and unique culinary experiences. Iceland is known as the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ due to its volcanoes and glaciers, including brand-new lava fields and ever-changing glacier experiences. Visitors will experience incomparable natural wonders such as geothermal areas, geysers, record-setting waterfalls, accessible highlands, mountains and deserts, as well as hidden oases, five-gait horses, whales and more.
In Wednesday’s announcement, PLAY’s CEO, Birgir Jónsson, said,
“These four new destinations will strengthen PLAY's route schedule and open up Iceland as an ideal adventure for more Europeans. We are confident that these destinations will boost PLAY´s operations and that our flights between Iceland and these cities will be popular among those living there.”
Founded in 2019 by Arnar Magnússon, PLAY is a new Iceland-based low-cost carrier (LCC) which operates flights between Iceland and Europe, and has future plans to offer transatlantic long-haul service between Europe and North America. The airline launched their inaugural passenger revenue flight on Thursday, June 24, 2021, with service between Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and London Stansted (STN). PLAY’s fleet of three Airbus A321neos currently connects customers to 16 European destinations. Next spring, the carrier will have added new aircraft to their fleet, prior to the launch of low-cost transatlantic flights to North America.
