On Wednesday (December 21, 2022), Porter Airlines announced the delivery of their first two of 50 Pratt & Whitney GTF-powered Embraer E195-E2s on order. Porter also has purchase rights for 50 additional aircraft and is now the North American launch customer for the E195-E2. The aircraft were accepted at a delivery ceremony at Embraer’s headquarters in Brazil on Wednesday, and Porter will receive an additional three of the aircraft before the end of the year. The new Embraer E195-E2s will allow Porter to open routes throughout North America, including to the West Coast, Southern U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean.

Initially, the carrier will deploy the new jets at Toronto Pearson International Airport, with Halifax, Montreal and Ottawa also seeing new E195-E2 service. Although the aircraft can accommodate 146 passengers, Porter has configured their E195-E2s in an all-Economy Class layout with varying seat pitches of 30, 34 and 36 inches on offer for added guest comfort.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Porter Airlines CEO, Michael Deluce, said,

“The official delivery of these aircraft is the beginning of a new era for Porter. The E195-E2 enables us to reach across the continent, beyond our Eastern Canada roots, while introducing a level of service for economy air travellers that no other North American airline provides. It’s an enhanced experience that builds on our reputation for providing an elevated level of service to every passenger at reasonable prices in a single class of service. The first planes are ready to fly to Canada later this month before going into regular service in February.

“These GTF-powered E195-E2 aircraft will deliver operational and environmental value that let us reach more customers, with an even better travel experience. We’ve already announced our first routes with these aircraft, which will fly from Toronto Pearson to Montréal, Ottawa Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Halifax. This is the beginning of a North American expansion that will see us serve destinations throughout the continent.”

Also commenting on the first two E195-E2 deliveries to Porter, Embraer Commercial Aviation’s CEO, Arjan Meijer, said,

“Porter is focused on delivering what we all want – making the air travel experience a pleasure rather than a pain. Along with their exciting levels of service and generosity, Porter’s entire fleet is also without the dreaded middle seat, and will also satisfy the sustainability needs of Porter’s guests. The E195-E2 is the most environmentally-friendly single-aisle aircraft, at 65% quieter and up to 25% cleaner than previous-generation aircraft. It has the lowest fuel consumption per seat and per trip among 120- to 150-seat aircraft, and is the quietest single-aisle jet flying today.”

Porter Airlines’ new Embraer E195-E2s are powered by Pratt & Whitney’s quiet and efficient GTF engines. The carrier also operates a fleet of De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney PW150A turboprop engines.

In a separate press release from Pratt & Whitney on Wednesday (December 21, 2022), Pratt & Whitney’s President – Commercial Engines, Rick Deurloo, said,

“Our turboprop engines powered Porter Airlines’ first commercial flight, and we believe the GTF engine is integral to their future growth with larger, longer-range E195-E2 aircraft.”

Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engine is the only geared propulsion system delivering industry-leading sustainability benefits, mature dispatch reliability and world-class operating costs. It is the exclusive powerplant of the Embraer E-Jets E2 Family and offers a fuel consumption and CO2 emissions reduction of up to 15 percent per seat, a reduction of NOx emissions by 50 percent versus ICAO CAEP/6 emissions regulations and a 75 percent smaller noise footprint compared to prior generation aircraft. The GTF engine has also been certified to run on 50 percent SAF, and has been successfully tested on 100 percent SAF.
