Qantas has placed an order for four Boeing 787-9 and eight 787-10 Dreamliners, nearly doubling their existing fleet of 14 Boeing 787-9s.
On Wednesday (August 23, 2023), Boeing announced that Qantas has placed an incremental order for 12 additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner Family airplanes, including four Boeing 787-9s and eight 787-10s. The new jets will join Qantas’ existing fleet of 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The Dreamliner Family will help Qantas meet their near and long-term sustainability goals with reduced fuel consumption and emissions by up to 25 percent and a reduced noise footprint compared to previous generation airplanes.
In Wednesday’s announcement, Qantas Group’s CEO, Alan Joyce, said,
“This is another multi-billion-dollar investment in the national carrier, and it's great news for our customers and our people. The 787 and the GE engines fitted to them, are thoroughly proven and extremely capable.”
Also commenting on the new 787 Dreamliner order, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ President and CEO, Stan Deal, said,
“With its market-leading environmental performance, the 787 Dreamliner is central to Qantas' unwavering commitment to operate one of the most sustainable and capable fleets in the airline industry. Both the 787-9 and 787-10 offer enhanced efficiency, flexibility and passenger comfort to connect Australia and destinations around the world.”
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has a range of up to 7,566 nautical miles (14,010 km), allowing Qantas to connect Australia to Europe and North America. The larger Boeing 787-10 has a range of 6,330 nautical miles (11,730 km), and will enable to airline to add capacity on many popular regional and international routes.
