Qatar Airways celebrated the grand opening of their new state-of-the-art engine facility today. The 9,000 square foot Technical Engine Facility is expected to save the carrier over $2.2 million and 23,400 man hours annually.
On Wednesday (April 7, 2021), Qatar Airways announced the grand opening of their new state-of-the-art 9,000 square foot Technical Engine Facility. By streamlining Technical Maintenance operations, the airline expects to save over $2.2 million and approximately 23,400 man hours per year. The new Engine Facility building is in Qatar Airways’ Technical maintenance complex and was officially opened by the Minister of Transport and Communications, His Excellency Mr. Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti. Other dignitaries at the ribbon cutting ceremony included Qatar Civil Aviation Authority’s President, His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Nasser Turki Al Subaey, and Qatar Airways Group’s Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, as well as other senior executives and VIPs.
The new facility will centralize the engine maintenance and parts storage processes, while increasing production lines from four to eight to cover a variety of engine types. The ultra-modern temperature and humidity-controlled facility has the capacity to house up to 80 engines of various sizes. Additionally, the building includes two ‘Dust Control’ rooms to limit the presence of dust and other harmful particulates, as well as a dedicated Supply Chain area to minimizing the wait times for the ordering and delivery of spare parts.
Speaking at the grand opening ceremony, the Minister of Transport and Communications, H.E. Mr. Jassim Saif Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, said,
“Lately, the nation’s milestones in the field of aviation industry have increased despite the exceptional circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hamad International Airport has continued winning awards as the best airport in the world in terms of efficiency, service and amenities for travellers and Qatar Airways has ranked first and won several global awards. The State of Qatar, will continue the course of giving and work, as well as carrying out several projects in the future to keep pace with all developments in aviation industry, which is one of the most advanced industries in the world, toward a promising future and an advanced country that takes its position among world countries, until reaching the horizons of Qatar National Vision 2030.”
Also speaking on the special occasion, Qatar Airways Group’s Chief Executive, H.E. Mr. Akbar Al Baker added,
“The continuous improvement and expansion of our Technical Maintenance facilities is a key element in supporting the airline’s ongoing efforts to rebuild our global network to more than 140 destinations by the summer peak season. With the new Engine Facility, we have not only created one of the most technologically-advanced engine assembly and disassembly facilities available within the commercial aviation industry to date, but also doubled our engine production capabilities. The facility’s extensive dedicated Supply Chain area also means that we have instant access to a ready supply of engine parts and equipment, reducing our reliance on external suppliers and further supporting the reliability and technical capability of Qatar Airways’ fleet of next-generation aircraft.”
Qatar Airways is the national carrier of the state of Qatar and from mid-summer 2021 will operate over 1,200 weekly flights to more than 140 destinations, providing more flexible travel options to more global destinations than any other airline. Qatar Airways was named the ‘World’s Best Airline’ in the 2019 World Airline Awards managed by Skytrax as well as the ‘Best Airline in the Middle East’ and ‘Best Business Class.’ The carrier has also been awarded the title for ‘Best Business Class Seat’ in recognition of their ground-breaking Qsuite product which offers a spacious 1-2-1 seat layout and is available on flights to more than 45 destinations.
Additionally, Qatar Airways is the only carrier to have ever received the prestigious “Skytrax Airline of the Year” title five times. The airline normally serves over 170 global destinations with a fleet of more than 250 modern aircraft. The airline’s primary hub is located at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar.
