Starting January 20, 2025, South African Airways will resume daily service between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
On Thursday (January 16, 2025), South African Airways (SAA) announced the restart of daily service between OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) starting Monday, January 20, 2025. Flights will depart Johannesburg at 20:00 and arrive in Dar es Salaam at 02:30, while the return flights will depart Dar es Salaam at 05:10 and will arrive back in Johannesburg at 07:55 (all times local). The timing for the seven weekly return flights have been optimized to accommodate both point-to-point and connecting passengers.
In Thursday’s announcement, SAA’s Interim CEO, Professor John Lamola, said,
“This flight is not simply a milestone for SAA and linking Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam through air travel; it heralds a bridge that connects two of Africa’s most influential economies and strengthens the friendship between our nations. It brings together industries, communities and resources, enabling us to unlock greater prosperity, foster collaboration and generate new opportunities for trade, investment and development for both our economies, and for the people of South Africa and Tanzania.
“SAA’s regional network has emerged as a top performer, contributing significantly to the revenue of the SAA Group. More importantly, these regional connections are crucial for the broader economic growth of South Africa.”
South African Airways continues to expand their regional network with new routes and increased frequencies. In November 2024, the carrier expanded services to Harare (Zimbabwe) and Lusaka (Zambia) to 12 weekly flights, up from 10 and seven weekly flights, respectively. Flights to Lagos (Nigeria) and Accra (Ghana) have also increased from three to four times per week, while flights to Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) operate five times weekly. SAA also launched new service to Lubumbashi, the DRC’s mining hub, in November 2024. Additionally, SAA increased intercontinental flight frequencies to Perth (Australia) to five weekly flights from January 7, 2025.
