On Wednesday (March 31, 2021), Spirit Airlines announced a major expansion at Los Angeles International Airport with seven new routes, including service to Los Cabos (SJD), Louisville (SDF), St. Louis (STL), Columbus (CMH), New York (LGA), Milwaukee (MKE) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR). Puerto Vallarta becomes the carrier’s third Mexican vacation destination in addition to Cancun and Los Cabos. Direct service to Puerto Vallarta will be available from Los Angeles (LAX), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), and Houston (IAH). Starting May 5, 2021, Spirit will offer daily service between LAX and Los Cabos, while Nonstop flights to Puerto Vallarta start on July 1, 2021.

In Wednesday’s announcement, Spirit Airlines’ Vice President of Network Planning, John Kirby, said,

“Our new nonstop routes to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta mark our first ever international service out of LAX and are great complements to our beyond continental 48 route map which now serves 30 destinations in Latin American and the Caribbean. In addition, our convenient new nonstop domestic flights, along with our low competitive fares, create even more great getaway options for our Guests in the LA Basin.”

Also commenting on Spirit’s LAX expansion, Los Angeles World Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Justin Erbacci, added,

“With travel beginning to rebound, we are excited that Spirit Airlines is adding international service to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, as well as expanding domestic service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). LAX is the West Coast gateway to the world and these new nonstop destinations will provide new options for travelers who are ready to fly again.”

As previously mentioned, Spirit’s new Puerto Vallarta service is not only from LAX, but also from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Houston (IAH). In a separate announcement on new nonstop service to Puerto Vallarta, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico’s CEO, Raúl Revuelta, said,

Passengers are looking for destinations that offer the characteristics of Mexican beaches, such as Puerto Vallarta, and that are relatively close to their destination of origin. In addition to the biosafety protocols and destination policies, they have made tourism safe and welcome Guests with pleasure. That is why we are very pleased to be part of Spirit's route map expansion in 2021.”
