TAAG Angola Airlines has taken delivery of their first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, one of four 787s on order. The aircraft will allow the carrier to expand in Europe, while opening new opportunities in Europe and North America.
On Friday (January 31, 2025), Boeing announced that TAAG Angola Airlines has taken delivery of their first of four Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order. The first aircraft has also debuted the airline’s new livery, and will allow for expansion in Europe, while opening new opportunities in Asia and North America. TAAG’s new 787-9 is on lease from AerCap, and arrived in Luanda just ahead of Angola’s Liberation Day on February 4th, marking nearly 50 years since the delivery of Angola’s first Boeing airplane, a 737-200.
In Friday’s announcement, TAAG Angola Airlines’ CEO, Nelson Pedro Rodrigues de Oliveira, said,
“The delivery of the 787-9 is a pivotal step in our strategy to modernize TAAG Angola Airlines’ fleet. This airplane brings the efficiency and versatility we need to meet growing market demands, replace our aging widebody fleet, and deliver a world-class experience to our passengers.
Also commenting on the milestone 787 delivery, Boeing’s VP – Commercial Sales for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, added,
“The 787 Dreamliner will complement TAAG Angola Airlines’ fleet of Boeing 737 and 777 jets, as we continue to support the airline in its mission to connect people and places across the globe. Our 50-year relationship with TAAG Angola Airlines has been built on trust and shared goals, and we look forward to many more years of successful collaboration and innovation together.”
Currently, TAAG operates five Boeing 777-300ERs, three 777-200ERs, and seven Boeing 737NG aircraft, connecting Angola to 13 international destinations across Africa, Europe, South America and China. Ordered by TAAG in 2023, the 787 Dreamliner is a core part of the carrier’s fleet modernization program. The fuel efficient, state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliner reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 25 percent compared to the airplanes it will replace.
Luanda-based TAAG Angola Airlines was founded in 1938, and for over 80 years, the carrier has connected Angolans with key domestic and international markets. TAAG is Angola’s leading airline, and currently serves 12 domestic and 13 international destinations. In addition to passenger transport, TAAG offer air cargo services, which has become essential to Angola’s growth and development.
