United Airlines has announced an over half a billion expansion and modernization of their hub at Washington Dulles, including a new 435,000 square foot concourse, a new United Club, state-of-the-art customer amenities, and a new flight attendant training center.
On Tuesday (December 3, 2024), United Airlines and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) announced an over $500 million expansion and modernization of their hub at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). The project includes a new 435,000-sq. ft. Concourse E with 14 gates, a new expansive United Club and state-of-the-art customer amenities, as well as a new flight attendant training center. The IAD expansion project is expected to be completed in late 2026.
In Tuesday’s announcement, United Airlines’ CEO, Scott Kirby, said,
“Washington Dulles has emerged as a global gateway and these new investments will help deliver the world-class facility that our employees and customers deserve. Today is one of many milestone celebrations to come in United's long-term commitment in advancing our Dulles hub.”
Also commenting on the airport expansion, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s President and CEO, Jack Potter, said,
“Washington Dulles International is a key economic engine for the National Capital Region, and United Airlines is our essential partner in the rapid and ongoing growth of the airport. United’s commitment to Dulles – through its support of the new concourse, its long-term expansion plans, including new flights and destinations, investment in new training and technical facilities and the addition of thousands of local jobs – is a testament to the strength of our partnership in promoting regional economic growth and pursuing our mutual goal of providing world-class service to the traveling public.”
United is the Washington D.C. region’s largest airline, employing over 8,000 local team members and offering more flights and destinations than any other airline. United’s new IAD flight attendant training center is scheduled to open in 2025, in support of ongoing growth of their Dulles network. Currently, the carrier is operating 25 percent more flights compared to 2023.
Currently under construction, the new Concourse E will exclusively house 14 dedicated United gates, which will add space to accommodate United Next’s new widebody and mainline aircraft, which will continue entering service in the coming years. The modernized concourse will also include direct access to the airport’s existing Aerotrain station, which facilitates transport between the main terminal and other concourses. United’s new gates will feature the latest traveler amenities and technology, along with expansive gate seating, concessions and retail space. As previously mentioned, Concourse E will also be home to a new 40,000 sq. ft. United Club, one of the largest in the network, with a 70 percent increase in square footage.
