United Airlines plans the largest transatlantic expansion in the airline’s history, including 10 new flights and five new destinations for summer 2022. New destinations include Amman, Bergen, the Azores, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife.
On Thursday (October 14, 2021), United Airlines announced the largest transatlantic expansion in the company’s history, with 10 new flights and five new destinations debuting in summer 2022. The five new destinations launching from spring 2022 include Amman (Jordan), Bergen (Norway), Ponta Delgada, Azores (Portugal), Palma de Mallorca (Spain), and Tenerife (Canary Islands), none of which are served by any North American carrier. United will also add new flights to five popular European destinations, including Berlin, Dublin, Milan, Munich and Rome. Additionally, the airline will launch seven routes that were interrupted by the pandemic, with flights to Bangalore, Frankfurt, Tokyo-Haneda, Nice and Zurich (pending government approval).
In Thursday’s announcement, United Airlines’ SVP – International Network and Alliances, Patrick Quayle, said,
“Given our big expectations for a rebound in travel to Europe for summer, this is the right time to leverage our leading global network in new, exciting ways. Our expansion offers the widest range of destinations to discover – introducing new, trendy locales that our customers will love, as well as adding more flights to iconic, popular cities.”
United will offer three weekly flights between Washington D.C. and Amman, Jordan from May 5, 2022, and the route will be serviced with a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Service between New York-Newark and Ponte Delgada in the Azores will start on May 13, 2022, complementing United’s existing service to Porto, which resumes in March and Lisbon, which currently operates from New York-Newark and will resume from Washington D.C. next summer. Service to Ponte Delgado will be operated with a brand-new Boeing 737-8 MAX, featuring United’s new signature interior.
From May 20, 2022, United will become the only U.S. airline offering flights to Norway, with three weekly Boeing 757-200 flights between New York-Newark and Bergen. Three weekly flights between Newark and Palma de Mallorca in the Balearic islands will also launch on June 2nd with a Boeing 767-300ER, complementing existing service to Madrid and Barcelona. United will also launch three weekly Boeing 757-200 flights from Newark to Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands from June 9, 2021.
As previously mentioned, United Airlines will be adding flights to popular European gateways next spring. The carrier will add new daily flights between Denver and Munich, joining existing service from Denver to Frankfurt and London which will resume next March. New daily flights will be added between Chicago and Milan, complementing existing service to Rome, and daily service will also be added between Washington D.C. and Berlin, joining existing service to Berlin from Newark. United will also launch an additional daily flight from Newark to both Dublin and Rome.
Finally, United will begin seven new routes which were interrupted by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Daily service between San Francisco and Bangalore will start on May 26th, and daily flights between Newark and Nice will launch on April 29th. From April 23, 2022, United will launch a second daily service between Newark and Frankfurt, as well as daily flights between Chicago and Zurich. Flights to Tokyo-Haneda will also start from Washington D.C., Los Angeles and New York-Newark from March 26, 2022.
