United Airlines will offer three weekly flights between New York/Newark and Cape Town from June 5, 2022. The route will be serviced with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner featuring 48 United Polaris Business Class, 21 Premium Plus and 39 Premium Economy seats.
On Thursday (February 10, 2022), United Airlines announced an expansion of service to Cape Town, South Africa with three weekly flights from New York/Newark (EWR) starting June 5, 2022. Currently, United is the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service to Cape Town International Airport, and offers more service to South Africa than and other North American airline. The route will be serviced with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner featuring 48 lie-flat United Polaris® Business Class seats, 21 United Premium Plus® seats and 39 Economy Plus® seats. All seats are equipped with seatback on-demand entertainment, to help guests pass the time and relax during their journey.
In Thursday’s announcment, United Airlines’ Senior Vice President of International Network Planning and Alliances, Patrick Quayle, said,
“By offering flights to Cape Town year-round, we’re making it even easier for our customers to visit one of the world’s best destinations. United’s direct flights from New York/Newark cut the usual travel time to Cape Town by more than five hours, giving visitors extra time to enjoy the beauty and majesty of South Africa.”
According to Expedia’s 2022 Travel Trends Report, over two-thirds (68%) of Americans are planning to ‘go big’ on their next trip, with around one-third planning to visit a ‘bucket list’ destination this year.
United Airlines first launched flights to Cape Town in December 2019, with the destination quickly becoming one of the carrier’s marquee international routes. The airline later built on this success in Africa with the launch of service between New York/Newark and Johannesburg in June 2021, between Washington D.C. and Accra, Ghana in May 2021, and between Washington D.C. and Lagos, Nigeria in November 2021. United offers service to 74 international destinations from New York/Newark, more than any other U.S. carrier. New destinations for 2022 include Palma de Mallorca (Spain), the Azores (Portugal), Bergen (Norway), Tenerife (Spain) and Nice (France).
